Mindset of A Successful Author

The success of an author follows that of a positive and goal oriented mind 1st…. and actions SECOND!
What separates successful authors from the not so successful authors is simply in the way each think. Think And Grow Rich could have easily been about the journey of an author who refused to quit and reaped the rewards for maintaining the highs and lows of their journey… never viewing failure as a loss, but a lesson to be learned and applied. This is the mindset of a successful author…
AUTHOR MINDSET (the mindset of a successful author) VS. WRITER MINDSET (a romantics mindset): A writer’s focus is always squared upon creating. In thinking this way, one can see how easily the writer is put off with bouts of writer’s block, endless rounds of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th drafts, merciless rewrites, all in the pursuit of perfection.
This is a romantics mindset, that of a writer. They’re an artist at heart and great art can never be rushed. It has to be cultivated until perfection is reached. This is the sole reason why writers are such emotional creatures; they are creatives. And creatives to stay in a state of happiness must always be creating. The direct opposite of having the mindset of a successful author.
Now an author’s mindset is that of exactness. Always looking to trim the fat and get to the meat of the matter. They don’t cower from problems and shield themselves from the inevitable growing pains of success.
They look for it. They welcome it. They go out of their way seeking it. Because they know once a problem is solved, then and only then, can they continue their journey towards success.
An author must tear the works from the writer, because they would rather die than to willing let it go. Then the author’s job is to sell what the writer wrote. Doesn’t matter if it’s good, bad, or bland. The mindset of a successful author knows that he’s in the business of selling what the writer wrote.
So what follows is the steps the successful author takes:
- Locating the target market.
- Making sure the product (the book) is marketable. The book cover, title, and blurb must resonate with the market.
- Building up buzz before launch.
- Amassing as many book reviews as possible before launch.
- Building or continuing growing an email list.
- Deciding whether to sell their book organically or by paid ads.
- Automate the entire system.
- Check back in with the writer to see if the next project is close to completion so the author can do the above listed things all over again.
Understanding that come hell or high water, this is what must be done in order for a book to sell is the mindset of a successful author.
LOSS VS. LESSON: Any discomfort felt by a writer (writer’s block, low to no book sells, etc.) and they will deem it as a loss. The author understands that this is part of the author’s journey and will become a student of the problem until a solution arises. So when the unexpected happens again, a solution will always be readily available.
WRITING FOR THE LONG HAUL: Above all else, the author understands the writer is needed and vice versa. And for both of them to see any true success, the long game of writing has to be played.
Meaning the writer knows he must become more productive despite any disruption to their creative process and the author knows that in order for the writer to get better he must be given the room to be great.
Once the writer and author grows clear on the overall objective, then the mindset of a successful author can truly be formed.
